Mary Anderson

Mary Anderson has been involved in Power of the Pen since 1987. She was a coach whose students loved Power of the Pen and fared very well in tournaments. She traveled the state acting as a Tab Room supervisor for many years, eventually convincing her dearly beloved husband Bill to join her as a computer scorer.

Mary has been involved with the State Committee as secretary and president (and provider of deli trays for lunch). She was a contributing author of the Center for Learning’s Biography series, and penned a chapter in a book for teachers titled Why Workshop?.

She was selected Teacher of the Year at several schools and was honored as Outstanding Teacher at the Power of the Pen State Tournament in 2002. In 2013 she received the Mahar Award as a notable alumna of St. Mary High School.

Mary has attempted to retire from Power of the Pen for several years, but she has found it is a “work in progress.” She has retired from teaching but works as a tutor two days per week. She remains committed to Power of the Pen because of its inestimable impact on young writers.
